Serendipitous encounter
The Facebook universe has a strange way of bringing people together.
What started as a peculiar case of serendipity quickly developed into a dynamic partnership.
Bunga Raya Band was formed over a simple post click that led to a conversation about music at Starbucks.
Though the world’s apart in terms of musical backgrounds, their strengths complement each other well.
Who are Bunga Raya Band?
The Bunga Raya is Malaysia’s national flower. It feels apt for a band with a Malaysian sound.
Bunga Raya Band is a Peranakan themed outfit that delivers Folk, Shanghai & Nusantaran sounds with a modern, engaging and fun twist. Clad in a kebaya, Joyce belts powerful, pitch-perfect vocals to the classic strums of Kelvyn’s guitar.
Joyce’s bright, expressive voice and jovial character, together with Kelvyn’s weathered experience and exuberant disposition, are perfect ingredients for great chemistry on and off the stage.
Both of them cut their teeth in music differently. Kelvyn’s indie involvement in rock and experimental production contrasted Joyce’s Chinese folk singing style that she was formally trained in.
From two to completion
Joyce and Kelvyn’s polarising styles permitted Bunga Raya Band to furnish an eclectic sound for their performances, containing elements that are both idiomatic to the individual performers yet constructively harmonious.
Soon after, Siva, Aidrul and Aiman joined the fray and the band was complete.
Everyone agreed that a Malaysiana theme was something not very common these days and the band embarked on a direction for that sound.
